Vote for our Watchmen Commercial

June 16th, 2008

As previously mentioned, Diane and I made a short commercial for a contest for “The Watchmen,” a movie based on the bestselling comic book by Alan Moore. The movie in question will be released in 2009, and the winning entry will appear in the background of the movie!

The catch: the entry has to be voted in. So we’re counting on our friends and fans to help make this a reality!

To watch and vote for our movie,

  • go to http://www.youtube.com/user/watchmenmovie
  • click on “Vote” in the purple area
  • in the “Search for the video” box type “briandoom” (or click on “next video” until you see it)
  • the name of the video is “Nostalgia by Veidt (30s ver…”
  • When you see our video, click the little “thumbs up” sign

Thanks for your support!

Scary Cow 5 & The Templetons Trailer

June 3rd, 2008

Scary Cow Showcase #5 on Sunday was very fun; we screened all the movies at the Victoria Theater, to a sold-out house!

Digant Kasundra’s Cursed (on which I was the Director of Photography) won 2nd Place in the Phase One category, which means we got a token cash prize. Very cool. That short will be visible with all the others on the Scary Cow web site, “soon.”

The trailer for The Templetons also screened, to rave reviews. I’ll post the trailer soon, on the page for The Templetons.

Nostalgia, by Veidt

May 30th, 2008

In between rendering the “1923 remix” of The Artist and continuing work on The Templetons, Diane and I shot a quick entry for a contest related to the upcoming movie adaptation of The Watchmen, due for release summer 2009.

One of the characters, Adrian Veidt, “the smartest man in the world”, was once a costumed hero but now is a captain of enterprise. He has many businesses, and one of them is a scent called “Nostalgia.” The producers of The Watchmen provided a number of assets (including green-screened product shots) for a bunch of different products, including shoes, the Veidt airline, and the Nostalgia perfume. The contestants post onto YouTube and a few entries will appear in the background of the movie.

So here’s ours. Be sure to vote for us here on their YouTube channel between June 2nd and June 20th!

30 second version:

alternate, 15 second version (don’t worry, it’s not votable so there will be no confusion):

Screenings at Scary Cow showcase

May 24th, 2008

Coming up on June 1st, I have not one but three different shorts showing at the Victoria Theater in San Francisco.

  • The trailer for The Templetons, based on the comic book by Matt Voss. I directed this one and edited as well. I’m still editing the larger piece, but next Sunday will be a little taste of what it will be like.
  • The music video Sagar directed by Karuna Tanahashi. I edited this one.
  • Digant Kasundra’s incredibly funny Cursed, on which I was the Director of Photography (I set up lights and ran the little camera!

Sunday, June 1st at the Victoria Theatre; doors open at 3pm. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $5 apiece at http://tickets.scarycow.com/

The Templetons trailer is ready

May 24th, 2008

I am pleased to announce the completion of the trailer for The Templetons. Whew!

I may have bitten off a bit more than I could chew this round with Scary Cow; I edited The Templetons, which I directed, but I also edited the music video for Sagar by Salman Ahmed, also appearing in Scary Cow. So I’ve spent the last few weeks getting not enough sleep and doing nothing but editing and rendering.

However– it’s done! After the trailer is screened at Scary Cow, I will be posting it online.

Now notice that this is the TRAILER for The Templetons… Matt Voss and I are working hard on the real deal to submit to more film festivals, in addition to the next round of Scary Cow in three months. I’m assuming Matt is working hard on background drawings, because he keeps sending them to me, but for all I know he drew them all in advance. That would be sneaky.

Brian Vouglas on big screen tonight

April 11th, 2008

The editing of The Templetons continues.

Brian Vouglas, who starred in the trailer for The Templetons, in addition to playing the energetic Noodlesville DJ, dropped me a line about the spec iPod Touch commercial he stars in.

It’s screening tonight as part of the “2ND ANNUAL EPIDEMIC FILM FESTIVAL,” which is put on by the students at the Academy of Art film program (it’s a student film). Showing at the Castro Theater tonight at 7pm.

The Templetons: wrapped

April 6th, 2008

We’ve finished principal photography on The Templetons! Woo hoo!

Working with Chris Hayes (now appearing at The Climate Theater with Crisis Hopkins) was totally awesome. He was so funny while staying completely professional. Looking at the logs, most of his “good takes” are Take 1 or Take 2. Amazing.

Now we edit, and work on the visual effects. The trailer will be shown at the Scary Cow Round 5 showcase on June 1st, with the finished short showing the next round (Round 6).

Current projects: April 2008

April 1st, 2008

Very excited about all the projects I’m working on at the moment.

I’m editing a music video for the song Sagar by Salman Ahmad, and directed by Karuna Tanahashi, in association with Scary Cow.

I am also in the middle of shooting The Templetons, another Scary Cow production, this one based on the comic book of the same name by Matt Voss. I’m directing this one, but that is just the beginning: we are shooting on “virtual sets”, entirely against a chroma green background. Since I’m also editing the piece, I’ll be pretty busy after we finish principal photography not only editing, but completing the effects filters, written in Apple Shake.

On top of all that, my espionage / crypto-metaphysics web serial I Work For Nemesis is in preproduction. I’m trying to keep the production pretty loose, which is weird for me. Much of the point of IW4N is the changing nature of the premise: I want to let it evolve as I develop the story.

  • everything will be shot with the bare minimum of gear
  • everything will be shot at a very fast pace, with “guerilla” speed – I want to maximise episode throughput. My goal is to accelerate to a top speed of 20 episodes in 2 months. Assuming we’re shooting mainly on weekends, that is about 2-3 episodes per weekend! Don’t worry, the episodes are short.
